Upcoming in April is a trip to Moab, Utah to build our skills in astrophotography. We will be doing a private workshop with Joshua Snow who is a renowned astrophotographer.

Trip Highlights

  • Four days at Arches NP and Canyonlands NP, two evenings of which will be a private astrophotography workshop. The Milky Way should be prevalent in the night skies, most visible from 3am – 6am. A great feature of these national parks is that they are deemed “dark sky” parks. There is limited or no light pollution and thus, they are great for night sky photography.
  • Sunrise and Sunset photo opportunities:
    • Mesa Arch
    • Delicate Arch – we have photographed this arch previously but in the middle of the day when the sun is producing harsh light. One of our goals for this trip is to photograph this arch at sunrise.
  • We will also visit the Bisti Badlands wilderness area for photograph cracked eggs, a fascinating rock formation that looks like mother nature’s eggs. On our first visit to Bisti we missed out on these eggs. This time it will be our first and primary goal.
  • Another possible add-on while on our way (maybe on our way back) to Moab is to stop at a rock formation called, “House on Fire” which is near Blanding, UT. We have been there twice before. The House on Fire is a Pueblo home embedded in a rock face that is lit up by the sun late mornings. At the correct time the Pueblo home looks as if it is on fire. The first time we visited the sun lit up the rocks perfectly but my photo composition was a bit lacking. The second visit was quite cloudy giving us less than optimal shooting conditions.
  • And yet another possible add-on is Fallen Roof Ruins (near Blanding, UT), an Anasazi site located in an alcove along the canyon’s north wall. This visit requires a 3.0 mile round trip hike with ~350 feet of elevation at ~6,000 feet.

Here are some images to scroll through from our previous visits to Moab and House on Fire.
