Welcome to our first “Picture of the Week” where we will highlight one of our photos, past or present. Each and every Monday morning expect a photo for your viewing pleasure accompanied by a short story about the subject matter or photographic thought process in creating the photo.

She just kept on staring which gave me ample time to get this shot!

The photo below is of a lioness relaxing on a tree which looked to me like good subject matter. The most important part of the shot is to make sure her eyes are focussed (and in focus) on me. The impact of the photo is greater with the subject looking right at the viewer – you. Since the tree was a few feet above ground level and the safari vehicle was in a depressed area, I was able to get this shot looking up at her. When shooting wildlife, it is best if you can shoot up – giving the subject an air of superiority and stature. Of course, the lion, like any cat, does not need any help feeling superior. After awhile I became less than relaxed as she stared and stared, maybe thinking I looked like the makings of a good meal.

The lighting was excellent as it was a partially cloudy afternoon and her coat looked awesome, probably just back from the cleaners. There was a sprinkling of sun coming from her right which enhanced her coat and provided a bit of shadowing on the left side of her face – nice portrait lighting.  Finally, I considered the background. I had Dominic (our guide) move a few feet from our original position so I could make sure there were green trees behind her.

Thanks for stopping by. And remember, its all about the light.
